Growing up in coastal Dorset, I have always had a strong connection to the land and sea. My work as a contemporary landscape painter is in response to the emotional atmosphere of these places, particularly during transitional states: from day to night, dusk and afterglow. Each piece is created slowly over time, building up layers and translucent veils of colour so that the piece goes on a journey to become itself; an object in its own right. Periods of energetic mark-making followed by slow, sensuous brushwork combine to create a deep, complex surface. Colour is an integral part of my process. I will spend time crafting colour harmonies that explore subtle shifts in tone, in hope of capturing the atmosphere of a still, quiet moment. The creation of each piece is prayerful and meditative, and aspires to share with the viewer a moment of stillness and peace inspired by the beauty and grace of nature.
